On 8 July 2024, we drove to Diest, in the province of Flemish Brabant, Belgium. We settled into a campsite by a pond, with a windmill.
The Diest beguinage
First visit: the Diest beguinage, a UNESCO World Heritage site along with the other Flemish beguinages. Cobbled lanes, small houses and many statues of nuns, in surprising calm.
The town centre and moules-frites
We then head to the town centre and the Church of Saint Sulpitius. In the evening, dinner on a terrace in the heat: moules-frites, Belgium’s national dish, with shrimps. The town is lively at night, and in the morning we wake up to the pond and windmill before heading back to France.
Practical info
- Diest: about 60 km east of Brussels.
- Beguinage: free access, a few minutes’ walk from the centre.
- Grote Markt and Saint Sulpitius church in the heart of town.
