I visited Venice in April 2025 for four days, flying from Luxembourg. By day, the lagoon islands and museums. In the evening, almost empty lanes: that’s when La Serenissima is at its most beautiful.

What to see in Venice

  • St Mark’s Square, the basilica (skip-the-line ticket recommended), the Doge’s Palace and the Bridge of Sighs.
  • St Mark’s Campanile, for the view over the whole city.
  • The Rialto Bridge and the fish market, in the morning, to watch Venice wake up.
  • La Fenice, the Venice opera house, sumptuous inside.
  • The Cannaregio Ghetto, historic and peaceful.
  • The Arsenal and the Naval History Museum, to understand Venice’s maritime power.
  • Venice at night: the walk not to miss.

The lagoon islands

A full day by vaporetto: Torcello, the quietest, with its Devil’s Bridge; Burano, the prettiest village in the lagoon with its colourful houses; Mazzorbo, linked to Burano by a bridge, with the Venissa vineyard; and Murano, the glass island, at the end of the day.

Where to eat in Venice

  • Trattoria Al Gazzettino, near St Mark’s, Venetian food.
  • Ai Banky in Burano, away from the tourist area, authentic and delicious.
  • Caffè Florian, on St Mark’s Square, for the historic setting.

Practical info

  • Arrival at Marco Polo airport, then a boat transfer to the centre.
  • I stayed at Hotel Nazionale, near the station, handy for doing everything on foot.
  • Get a vaporetto pass for the islands.
  • Book St Mark’s Basilica to avoid the queue.
