The Gruyère region, in the canton of Fribourg, is foodie Switzerland at its best: chocolate in the morning, cheese at lunchtime, and a medieval town perched among the pastures. A perfect day, which I did in October 2025.

Maison Cailler in Broc

The Maison Cailler chocolate factory, founded in 1819, offers a tour of Swiss chocolate history, with the old Nestlé-Peter-Cailler wagons, the manor house and a tasting at the end. You leave with bags full of bars.

The Gruyère AOP cheese dairy

At the foot of the village, the show dairy explains how real Gruyère AOP is made, with an immersive tour and the maturing cellar where thousands of wheels wait their turn.

The medieval town of Gruyères

The fortified village of Gruyères, with its cobbled main street, church and castle, has a superb view of the Prealps. At the Fleur de Lys restaurant I ate local: Gruyère quiche, alpine macaroni and meringue with double cream.

Practical info

  • Broc and Gruyères are a few minutes apart: one day is enough to see everything.
  • Start with the chocolate factory in the morning, then the dairy and the medieval town in the afternoon.
  • Gruyère combines well with Valais and the Lake Geneva area.
