In September 2024 I crossed Japan in fifteen days, from Osaka to Tokyo. A journey out of time, between ancient temples, ultra-modern cities, nature and incredible food at every meal. Here is the itinerary day by day.

My itinerary

  • Osaka: arrival and first skewers.
  • Himeji and its castle, then Miyajima island and its torii in the sea.
  • Hiroshima: the Peace Park and Memorial, and the local okonomiyaki.
  • Kyoto and Nara: temples, deer and the bamboo forest.
  • Koyasan: the cemetery under the cedars, Kongobu-ji temple and Buddhist meditation at dawn.
  • Takayama, Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa: morning markets, the samurai district and Kenroku-en garden.
  • Matsumoto and its castle, Narai-juku, unchanged since the Edo period.
  • Mount Fuji from Kawaguchiko, then Hakone and Kamakura.
  • Tokyo to finish in style.

Tips for a first trip

  • September is still very hot and humid: bring water and light clothes.
  • Motorway service areas and konbini are perfect for eating quickly and well.
  • Get up early to see Mount Fuji: the clouds come in fast.
