Ein Bergsee bei Ghisoni auf Korsika

🇫🇷 Corsica - Ghisoni, its mountains, lakes and free-roaming cows

1 min read

Saturday 2 May 2026, we swap the beach for inland Corsica. We head to Ghisoni, a mountain village about 40 minutes from Ghisonaccia, surrounded by forests and peaks. It’s the island’s other face, wilder and much cooler.

The free-roaming cows of Ghisoni

Here the animals are at home. Cows wander calmly through the village and along the roads, goats climb the rocks. You have to drive slowly, but it’s quite a sight.

Lunch in the mountains

At midday, lunch in the mountains at Ghisoni, with Corsican cheese and a pétanque pitch right next door to help with digestion. Nothing is more Corsican than a game of boules after lunch.

The lakes and a walk at altitude

In the afternoon we climb to the lakes above Ghisoni. The water is crystal clear, the peaks still have a few patches of snow in early May, and it’s much colder than down below. In the evening, back to the coast and, as so often, another barbecue.

Practical info

  • Ghisoni: about 40 minutes’ drive from Ghisonaccia, through the Fium’Orbu valley.
  • Narrow mountain roads: watch out for cows and goats on the road.
  • Bring a jacket: it’s much cooler up in the mountains than by the sea.
